Diamond coatings for micro end mills: Enabling the dry machining of aluminum at the micro-scale

چکیده
We show that thin diamond coatings can dramatically enhance the performance of micrometer-scale cutting tools. We present a new approach for coating 300 μm diameter tungsten carbide (WC) micro endmills using a tailored seeding method and hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) to obtain uniform, conformal, and continuous diamond coatings less than 2 μm in both thickness and grain size. The performance of the uncoated and coated tools has been evaluated by dry machining channels in 6061-T6 aluminum. The test results demonstrate far lower tool wear and breakage, much lower adhesion of aluminum to the tool, and significantly lower cutting forces for the coated tools. The coatings achieve amore predictable surface finish and enable dry machining at high speeds (40,000 rpm) with little or no burr formation. The improved performance of the coated tools is a result of the superior tribological properties of fine-grained diamond against aluminum, specifically low friction, low adhesion, and low wear of the film. Since the coating allows machining without lubricants and essentially eliminates metal burrs, this approach can reduce the environmental impact of micromachining processes and offers greatly improved performance for micro and meso-scale manufacturing applications. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Analyzing the performance of diamond-coated micro end mills
A method is presented to improve the tool life and cutting performance of 300mm diameter tungsten carbide (WC) micro end mills by applying thin (o300nm) fine-grained diamond (FGD) and nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) coatings using the hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HF-CVD) process. The performance of the diamond-coated tools has been evaluated by comparing their performance in dry slot m...

Currently, the standard material used for micro end mill tooling is sintered tungsten carbide with a cobalt binder. Its brittle nature coupled with the micro-scaled cutting features of the end mills often result in rapid tool degradation. Tool life and cutting performance can be significantly improved using a thin nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) coating. The high hardness (~90 GPa), low coefficie...
متن کاملEffect of Boron-Doped Diamond Interlayer on Cutting Performance of Diamond Coated Micro Drills for Graphite Machining
Thin boron doped diamond (BDD) film is deposited from trimethyl borate/acetone/hydrogen mixture on Co-cemented tungsten carbide (WC-Co) micro drills by using the hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) technique. The boron peak on Raman spectrum confirms the boron incorporation in diamond film. This film is used as an interlayer for subsequent CVD of micro-crystalline diamond (MCD) film....

متن کاملApplication of precision diamond machining to the manufacture of micro-photonics components
The use of diamonds to generate precision patterns and precision surfaces on a micrometer or nanometer scale has a history that dates back centuries. Uses of diamond in semi-automated machinery can be traced to ruling machines, pantographs, and ornamental turning with “diamond turning” dating back about a century. Poor behavior in machining more common materials (e.g. ferrous alloys) has limite...
